Beginning Oil Painting

$220 MEMBER PRICE: $198

with Danielle Neibling

Calendar Aug 4, 2026 at 1 pm, runs for 4 weeks

Don’t be afraid of texture, of thick luscious buttery layers of color, one on top of another. Right away we will open tubes and squeeze out paint to learn about this special and versatile medium. Starting with a value scale, and a simple still life in black and white in class #1.

Building on that foundation we will add personal subject items in class 2. We can expand our palette (choice of colors) – and—our subject matter while defining our preferences for paint handling. Paint handling is the very personal preference for more or less opacity vs transparency. We will discuss ways to thin the paint.

The final 2 classes will lean into a subject of the student’s choice: portrait, landscape, or still life that follows in the vein of the students newly discovered signature approach. We will keep our first 2 exercises a hand as a guide.

Materials not provided. Please bring the following:

4 11 x 14 gesso boards or stretched canvas of similar size.

Student grade set of oil paints, any brand.

Set of natural bristle brushes ¼ inch, ½ inch, 1 inch approximately.

Palette knife for mixing paint.

odorless mineral spirits.

palette – can be a piece of plywood or disposable paper ones.

5 or more lint free cotton rags.

A live 4-week online series that pairs process painting with freewriting in a held, intimate circle — the brush opens the door, and the pen walks through it. Each 3-hour session builds on the last, deepening participants' relationship with their own creative intelligence across the arc of a month. Participants leave each session with something they made, something they wrote, and a growing trust in what arises when they stop trying to get it right.

Open Print Lab (8/6)

$15 MEMBER PRICE: $1350

with Walter F. Allen-Henderson

Calendar Aug 6, 2026 at 4:30 pm

Open Print Lab is designed to be a creative exploration space! Open Print Lab is where our intergenerational printmakers, with an established practice, meet with others, share work, tips, and life's journeys! Enjoy access to 3 manual roll-top etching/relief presses for your self-directed projects! This studio session is not a regular instructional class, so we recommend beginners start with one of our various printmaking classes.

Folks are welcome to bring in anything that they wish, just so long as it goes back home with you! A Studio Monitor is available to answer questions and orient you on materials. Some materials are available at cost, so bring cash for additional supplies.
