Workshop! Expressive Abstract Art & Creative Writing

Create a unique image using specific abstract drawing techniques. Following the abstract art creation, follow a series of creating writing activities that will serve to explore the creative process, merging creativity with awareness. The session will complete with art showcasing and an open mic.

Relief Printing with Watercolors

This class will focus on how to create relief prints and then add color by using watercolor. This class is for beginners to advanced. Please bring in sketchbooks and drawings, and other ideas you may want to print. There will be demos on the printing method and also on watercolors. There will also be an Art History component; Artists such as : Georgio Morandi, Rembrandt, Durer, Mary Azarian and others will be touched on. We will have critiques too.

Semi-moist watercolors (can include black)
Brushes
Watercolor paper (cold press) smooth 9 x 12 (30)

Introduction to Soft Pastel

Pastels are a beautiful, direct way of creating a colorful drawing.This class will focus on color theory, techniques and approaches in soft pastel. Step-by-step instruction on working with shape, creating form, choosing colors and down to the details. This class is intended for beginner to intermediate skill level. Some drawing experience recommended, but all levels of experience are welcome.
Each week we’ll work on a different image. We’ll start by looking at inspiring images from art history that demonstrate the techniques. Then I’ll demonstrate that week’s techniques and then you’ll try them out. This class is great for beginners/intermediate, but I'll work with more advanced students to help you hone your skills.

Introduction to Acrylics

Beginner class! Great for someone just starting out with acrylic paint. I'll walk you through the basics: what to buy, using the materials, simple techniques and approaches, as well as clean-up and storage. This class will focus on mixing paints, working with layers and discovering what makes acrylic so special and versatile. Everything from how to hold the brush to how to create a sophisticated image with step-by-step instructions.
Day 1 will be more technical, with art history and techniques: We’ll start by looking at inspiring images from art history that explore the materials and basic techniques. Then I’ll demonstrate the process and then you’ll try them out. Day 2-4 will be work days, with the whole time for applying the techniques with one-on-one feedback on your artwork This class is perfect for beginners and those who want a refresher course.

Craft a Story: A Creative Writing and Illustrative Journey with Maggie Rush

Ever imagined writing a book for a child, or a poem with illustrations for a sister, aunt or friend? Well, here's your chance – Maggie Miller, ED of the Drawing Studio along with illustrator Brianna Stevens (whose work was recently seen in the Food Journey posters at Juneteenth) will walk you through both language and imagery for the production of your book in time for the holidays. Whether a simple one-word, one-page First Reader for a new born, or a beautiful crafted soliloquy for a loved one, this class will use community feedback and an easy atmosphere for a fun and creative outcome.
Materials provided by The Drawing Studio; however, a sketch book, journal, and a couple of well-loved children's books with illustrations are encouraged.
Color Matters: Learning How to Use Color to Your Advantage

No matter if you are interested in pastel, oils or acrylics or even colored pencils, color matters. Understanding how to make colors by mixing, understanding the harmony of colors and how color is used is critical to every artist. We will work with the color wheel, creating hues, values and harmonious combinations to explore how color can create great artwork.

Drawing Fundamentals I (Sep., Sun.)

In Drawing Fundamentals 1 (DF1), students learn four foundational drawing skills: shape/edge, measurement, light (value) and space (perspective). You will begin to combine these skills into drawings that will surprise you by their accomplishment and banish any fears regarding your ability to observe and draw.
Materials: Materials are not included; please bring the following supply list: · Graphite pencils: HB, 2B, 6B · Vine charcoal, soft · Kneaded eraser · Factis eraser, pen style · White sketch paper pad, approx. 14 x 17" (White drawing pad ok) · Small sketchbook, approx. 6 x 8" (Whatever you may already have is fine) Optional: · White plastic eraser · Gum eraser · Blending stumps or tortillions - Newsprint, approx 16 x 20.
