Try It! Intro to Charcoal

Charcoal is a fun and versatile medium! In this one-day class, you will learn the unique qualities and capabilities of charcoal as a drawing medium. Students will learn ways to handle charcoal to create a variety of marks, create values (shading), and learn additive and reductive method to create a simple, finished drawing from a provided photo image.

Saturday Evening Figure Drawing Salon
Join us on the first Saturday of every month for an evening of Figure Drawing with a live model! Starting in September, in our new studio, experience our figure drawing community while receiving a small demonstration and light direction from one of our amazing Teaching Artists. Snacks and beverages provided!
Please bring your own supplies. Accepted mediums include: graphite, charcoal, pastels, watercolor, acrylics, and clay!

Beginning Charcoal

In this 4-session class, you will learn various methods and techniques in working with the unique medium of charcoal. We will cover line and mark making, value (shading), blending with “stumps” and other materials, creating texture, and using erasers for special effects, as well as working loose and expressive. Each week, you will create a drawing using different techniques. Get ready to explore, experiment, and have creative fun!
Materials not included. Please bring the following supplies:
Required: Charcoal paper pad – 12x18 white, Vine charcoal (asst soft/hard in varying diameters), 1-2 sticks compressed charcoal, kneaded eraser, pen style eraser (fractis)
Optional: chamois cloth, sandpaper block, charcoal pencil, sharpener
Note: There are convenient charcoal supply kits available which include some of the needed supplies.
Drawing Fundamentals II (Oct., Sat.)

In Drawing Fundamentals II, you will explore natural and human-made subjects in greater depth, emphasizing composition and mark-making. Understanding and mastering foundational skills will inspire you to see and respond to the world around you with intensified interest and curiosity.
Please note: Drawing Fundamentals I or permission from the instructor required upon registration.
Materials are not included; please bring the following supply list:
Drawing Paper Pad approx. 16x20 or 18x24
Sketch Pad approx. 9x12 *Single sheet of toned paper, mid-tone neutral (alternate: large pad of toned paper)
Graphite: HB, 2B, 4B
Charcoal: vine, compressed, white “charcoal” (Conte OK),
Erasers: kneaded, art gum (optional: plastic eraser in “pen” form, ie: Factis), Chamois cloth (optional) *or instructor provides and is reimbursed by student
Drawing Fundamentals I (Oct., Sun.)

In Drawing Fundamentals 1 (DF1), students learn four foundational drawing skills: shape/edge, measurement, light (value) and space (perspective). You will begin to combine these skills into drawings that will surprise you by their accomplishment and banish any fears regarding your ability to observe and draw.
Materials: Materials are not included; please bring the following supply list: · Graphite pencils: HB, 2B, 6B · Vine charcoal, soft · Kneaded eraser · Factis eraser, pen style · White sketch paper pad, approx. 14 x 17" (White drawing pad ok) · Small sketchbook, approx. 6 x 8" (Whatever you may already have is fine) Optional: · White plastic eraser · Gum eraser · Blending stumps or tortillions - Newsprint, approx 16 x 20. This class is for adults. Ready-made kits are available at a discount from Posner's Art Store (944 E. University Blvd). Posner's is offering the kits for $70 (retail $110). The Drawing Studio members get 20% off Posner's!

Drawing Fundamentals III: Plein Aire Sharpie

No Class On 11/25
This DF3 Sharpie drawing class will focus to capture a still life and en plein air using sharpies with thick and thin lines. We will start by using cross hatching and hatching for shading and learning the value scale, as well as composition and texture. We will be working from still lives as well as the outdoors (if the weather cooperates). Prior knowledge of drawing will help (Line, value, texture, composition) but check with the instructor if you're not sure. There will be an Art History component added to the class.
Supplies are not included. Please bring the following materials:
- Make sure you have a variety of black sharpie thickness, chisel tip, fine, very fine
- sketch book (approx. 5 x 7 or 9 x 12)
-thick drawing paper (smooth) 12 x 18 or larger (10)
