Drawing Fundamentals I (Sep., Tue.)

In Drawing Fundamentals 1 (DF1), students learn four foundational drawing skills: shape/edge, measurement, light (value) and space (perspective). You will begin to combine these skills into drawings that will surprise you by their accomplishment and banish any fears regarding your ability to observe and draw.
Materials: Materials are not included; please bring the following supply list: · Graphite pencils: HB, 2B, 6B · Vine charcoal, soft · Kneaded eraser · Factis eraser, pen style · White sketch paper pad, approx. 14 x 17" (White drawing pad ok) · Small sketchbook, approx. 6 x 8" (Whatever you may already have is fine) Optional: · White plastic eraser · Gum eraser · Blending stumps or tortillions - Newsprint, approx 16 x 20. This class is for adults. Ready-made kits are available at a discount from Posner's Art Store (944 E. University Blvd). Posner's is offering the kits for $70 (retail $110). How to Anime 101

Learn how to draw in anime styles, using genres as our basis. We’ll look at and analyze your favorite anime, breaking down how you can obtain this main character skill, exploring the inner depths of anime history, genres, styles, tropes, theories, anime shows, and basic character designs.
Supplies not included. Please bring the following:
Pencil or other drawing tool
sketchpad or whatever you want to use to draw on (Ipad/tablets welcome)
Try It! Capturing the Essence: Lyrical Lines of Blind Contour

Draw exciting images with less rigidity by utilizing contour drawing! Contour drawing can mean looking only at the subject, and without lifting the pen, or looking at the paper, outlining the shapes of the composition. In this introduction class, we will learn about both blind and observational continuous contour. At any skill level, hone your drawing and enhance your observation, as we create images with extraordinary energy and fluidity.

ZOOM: Bird Drawing Basics

Explore the world of your local birds through drawing! We will take a step-by-step approach to drawing our feathered friends through photos and video.We will explore their favorite backyard birds through the fundamentals of drawing. We will apply these drawing skills to accurately capture our bird’s form and behavior. Students will also connect their birding knowledge to their drawings to inform anatomy, feather tracts, and other important identification landmarks. We will be rendering birds with graphite and colored pencils.The drawing skills that we are practicing in class will help you observe your feathered subjects carefully and capture the details for later reference.

In Drawing Fundamentals II, you will explore natural and human-made subjects in greater depth, emphasizing composition and mark-making. Understanding and mastering foundational skills will inspire you to see and respond to the world around you with intensified interest and curiosity.

Sketch Pad approx. 9x12 *Single sheet of toned paper, mid-tone neutral (alternate: large pad of toned paper)
Graphite: HB, 2B, 4B
Charcoal: vine, compressed, white “charcoal” (Conte OK),
Erasers: kneaded, art gum (optional: plastic eraser in “pen” form, ie: Factis), Chamois cloth (optional) *or instructor provides and is reimbursed by student
