In class, students will create a mixed media portrait using collage, drawing, and painting. The process is guided in clear stages, allowing each student to build a cohesive artwork step by step while making personal choices along the way.

Students will explore how to combine materials, layer imagery, and add visual storytelling through color, texture, and mark-making. Prompts are simple and flexible, supporting both beginners and experienced artists without overwhelming the process.

The art is the outcome, but the experience is where the magic resides. This is identity work, storytelling, documentation. Each participant will leave with a completed portrait that reflects their perspective, identity, and creative voice. One portrait, built in layers. Each phase adds something new, allowing students to choose how within each phase.

It's spooky season! Jump right in with an embroidered decorative hoop. For this 3-hour class, we will be creating and executing designs that bring joy to your fall soul while engaging in some basic embroidery techniques!

The idea of Sumi-e is the Art of Leaving Out.  The aim to simplify a subject to it's basic Essence. There is an honoring of the viewer"s own imagination by stripping away all but the most essential spirit of a subject.

In Drawing Fundamentals 1 (DF1), students learn four foundational drawing skills: shape/edge, measurement, light (value) and space (perspective). You will begin to combine these skills into drawings that will surprise you by their accomplishment and banish any fears regarding your ability to observe and draw.

Materials: Materials are not included; please bring the following supply list: · Graphite pencils: HB, 2B, 6B · Vine charcoal, soft · Kneaded eraser · Factis eraser, pen style · White sketch paper pad, approx. 14 x 17" (White drawing pad ok) · Small sketchbook, approx. 6 x 8" (Whatever you may already have is fine) Optional: · White plastic eraser · Gum eraser · Blending stumps or tortillions - Newsprint, approx 16 x 20. This class is for adults. Ready-made kits are available at a discount from Posner's Art Store (944 E. University Blvd). Posner's is offering the kits for $70 (retail $110). Sunday afternoon live figure drawing with one (long) pose. Each one-day session is for independent study, with no instruction, for ages 18+. You are welcome to paint or draw using whichever medium you prefer. Bring your own supplies. There are easels, chairs, horses and stools available for you to borrow.

A collaboration between The Drawing Studio, Raices Taller Gallery, and Roots & Roads Community Hospice, this series will commence with a lecture with renowned ofrenda-builders Antonio C. Estrada and Gloria J. Valenzuela, followed by 3 sessions of building mini-ofrendas taught by guest teaching artists.

The last Monday of every month features a clothed model.

Bright Nights is a welcoming, affirming space for all queer identities, expressions, and lived experiences (and supportive allies). This monthly gathering centers LGBTQIA+ artists, of all ages through art, storytelling, and community connection. Each month, a featured host artist shares their story and creative practice, followed by guided, hands-on multi-media art making. Join us for a joyful, reflective evening rooted in creativity, care, and connection within the queer community.
