Drawing Fundamentals I (Aug., Wed.)

In Drawing Fundamentals 1 (DF1), students learn four foundational drawing skills: shape/edge, measurement, light (value) and space (perspective). You will begin to combine these skills into drawings that will surprise you by their accomplishment and banish any fears regarding your ability to observe and draw.
Materials are not included; please bring the following supply list: · Graphite pencils: HB, 2B, 6B · Vine charcoal, soft · Kneaded eraser · Factis eraser, pen style · White sketch paper pad, approx. 14 x 17" (White drawing pad ok) · Small sketchbook, approx. 6 x 8" (Whatever you may already have is fine) Optional: · White plastic eraser · Gum eraser · Blending stumps or tortillions - Newsprint, approx 16 x 20. This class is for adults. Ready-made kits are available at a discount from Posner's Art Store (944 E. University Blvd). Posner's is offering the kits for $70 (retail $110). The Drawing Studio members get 20% off Posner's!
Open Print Lab (8/27)

Open Print Lab is designed to be a creative exploration space! Open Print Lab is where our intergenerational printmakers, with an established practice, meet with others, share work, tips, and life's journeys! Enjoy access to 3 manual roll-top etching/relief presses for your self-directed projects! This studio session is not a regular instructional class, so we recommend beginners start with one of our various printmaking classes.
Folks are welcome to bring in anything that they wish, just so long as it goes back home with you! A Studio Monitor is available to answer questions and orient you on materials. Some materials are available at cost, so bring cash for additional supplies.
Oil Pastel Pet Portraits
with Russell Kahn
You will learn specific pastel drawing techniques and approaches. Class includes a brief look at art history examples for inspiration, as well as information on the medium like what fixatives to use. With a focus on your animal, watch your drawing come to life through the texture and depth of pastels.

Pencil
Sharpener

Black sharpie
Pastels (Kakura Cray Pas)
Sketchbook/ white drawing paper 9x12 or smaller
Canson Black Paper 9 x 12, 24 sheets

Membership with The Drawing Studio is required for Print Lab participation. Membership dues allow us to keep cost low.

Try It! Lost and Found: The Art of Assemblage

Assemblage is a three-dimensional art form initiated by artists of the early Twentieth Century. In this course, we will use an assortment of art materials including found objects to create small-scale 3D art pieces. The focus will be on using the creative process to explore individual issues of anxiety, self-doubt, and artist's block. The goal is to build confidence in one's art practice.
Please bring any small materials found that you want to use to create. Otherwise, materials are provided by The Drawing Studio.
Workshop! Sumi-e Inspired Practice (Grass Orchid)

The idea of Sumi-e is the Art of Leaving Out. The aim to simplify a subject to it's basic Essence. There is an honoring of the viewer"s own imagination by stripping away all but the most essential spirit of a subject.

Long Pose Figure Drawing Studio (8/30)
with Patrick O'Dell
Sunday afternoon live figure drawing with one (long) pose. Each one-day session is for independent study, with no instruction, for ages 18+. You are welcome to paint or draw using whichever medium you prefer. Bring your own supplies. There are easels, chairs, horses and stools available for you to borrow.
Please arrive to Figure Drawing Studio 10-15 minutes early to get set up. Doors close promptly at 1 PM. If you arrive after the doors close, please wait until the first break when the doors open again.
Figure Drawing Studio (8/31)
