Sunday afternoon live figure drawing with one (long) pose. Each one-day session is for independent study, with no instruction, for ages 18+. You are welcome to paint or draw using whichever medium you prefer. Bring your own supplies. There are easels, chairs, horses and stools available for you to borrow.

A collaboration between The Drawing Studio, Raices Taller Gallery, and Roots & Roads Community Hospice, this series will commence with a lecture with renowned ofrenda-builders Antonio C. Estrada and Gloria J. Valenzuela, followed by 3 sessions of building mini-ofrendas taught by guest teaching artists. 

Materials provided by The Drawing Studio. Feel free to bring your own mementos for your Mini-Ofrenda.

The last Monday of every month features a clothed model.

Composition 1 introduces the basics of visual design elements (line, shape, texture, and space) and principles (balance, harmony, contrast). Students focus on developing their composition skills through drawing exercises, personal projects, class feedback, along with expansive examples from art and design history.

Bright Nights is a welcoming, affirming space for all queer identities, expressions, and lived experiences (and supportive allies). This monthly gathering centers LGBTQIA+ artists, of all ages through art, storytelling, and community connection. Each month, a featured host artist shares their story and creative practice, followed by guided, hands-on multi-media art making. Join us for a joyful, reflective evening rooted in creativity, care, and connection within the queer community.

In Drawing Fundamentals 1 (DF1), students learn four foundational drawing skills: shape/edge, measurement, light (value) and space (perspective). You will begin to combine these skills into drawings that will surprise you by their accomplishment and banish any fears regarding your ability to observe and draw.

Materials: Materials are not included; please bring the following supply list: · Graphite pencils: HB, 2B, 6B · Vine charcoal, soft · Kneaded eraser · Factis eraser, pen style · White sketch paper pad, approx. 14 x 17" (White drawing pad ok) · Small sketchbook, approx. 6 x 8" (Whatever you may already have is fine) Optional: · White plastic eraser · Gum eraser · Blending stumps or tortillions - Newsprint, approx 16 x 20. This class is for adults. Ready-made kits are available at a discount from Posner's Art Store (944 E. University Blvd). Posner's is offering the kits for $70 (retail $110). We will explore the basic tools and properties of digital painting and programs (from FireAlpaca to Photoshop). Brushes, tools, language, program specifics, making different paintings to explore each tool.

Materials not provided. Please bring the following:

FireAlpaca download (if you already have access to another program [clip studio paint, photoshop, procreate, etc] then you may also use that, however having access to FireAlpaca is recommended as it is both free and the program I will primarily teach).

Open Print Lab is designed to be a creative exploration space! Open Print Lab is where our intergenerational printmakers, with an established practice, meet with others, share work, tips, and life's journeys! Enjoy access to 3 manual roll-top etching/relief presses for your self-directed projects! This studio session is not a regular instructional class, so we recommend beginners start with one of our various printmaking classes.

Folks are welcome to bring in anything that they wish, just so long as it goes back home with you! A Studio Monitor is available to answer questions and orient you on materials. Some materials are available at cost, so bring cash for additional supplies.
