Try It! Intro to Charcoal

Charcoal is a fun and versatile medium! In this one-day class, you will learn the unique qualities and capabilities of charcoal as a drawing medium. Students will learn ways to handle charcoal to create a variety of marks, create values (shading), and learn additive and reductive method to create a simple, finished drawing from a provided photo image.

Materials provided by The Drawing Studio. 

Friday Print Lab (10/2)

Friday Print Lab is where our intergenerational printmakers, with an established practice, meet with others, share work, tips, and life's journeys! Enjoy access to 3 manual roll-top etching/relief presses for your self-directed projects! This studio session is not a regular instructional class, so we recommend beginners start with one of our various printmaking classes.

Membership with The Drawing Studio is required for Print Lab participation. Membership dues allow us to keep cost low. 

Folks are welcome to bring in anything that they wish, just so long as it goes back home with you! A Studio Monitor is available to answer questions and orient you on materials. Some materials are available at cost, so bring cash for additional supplies.

Next Steps in Oil Painting

Calendar Oct 2, 2026 at 1 pm, runs for 6 weeks

If you are interested in taking your oil painting skills to the next level, this class is for you. This class builds on foundational knowledge of oil painting and will cover advanced color theory, composition, and brushwork using complex subjects, landscapes, still life arrangements, and the human form. 

Advanced color theory will deal with creating sophisticated palettes using different color schemes like split complementary, analogous colors and using color temperature to create form. Composition refers to the sophisticated arrangement of visual elements—like line, shape, color, value, and space—within a painting as it related to the principles of design, like balance, emphasis, rhythm, unity and contrast. Knowledge of advanced color theory and composition can help students refine their oil painting skills.

Materials not provided. Please bring the following:

- Oil paints: Cadmium red, quinacridone rose, cadmium lemon Yellow, yellow ochre, ultramarine blue, phthalo blue, titanium white and burnt umber to start.

- Brushes: flat 6 or 8, filbert 4 and/or 6 and liner. Sizes will vary depending on the size of your painting.

- Brush washer. Palette knife. A palette. Gamsol (solvent), a mason jar for storing used Gamsol. Two 8x10 panel or canvas

Payment plan available: $50 deposit plus 2 payments of $93.33, paid every four weeks. Final payment of $93.34.

Intermediate Figure Drawing, Movement and Drama

In this 6 - week class, we will learn to use location and shape of the ribcage and pelvis to immediately begin to capture movement and drama with the energy that is expressed in the first three minutes of a pose.

We will explore the Anatomical elements that comprise the skeleton and muscular systems to understand distribution of weight, directions of movement and tensions in each pose. There will be printed handouts from three separate Anatomy books, for additional assistance to take home. 

Materials not provided. Please bring the following:

How to Anime 101

Ages: 14 - 19

Learn how to draw in anime styles, using genres as our basis. We’ll look at and analyze your favorite anime, breaking down how you can obtain this main character skill, exploring the inner depths of anime history, genres, styles, tropes, theories, anime shows, and basic character designs.

Supplies not included. Please bring the following:

Pencil or other drawing tool

sketchpad or whatever you want to use to draw on (Ipad/tablets welcome)

Saturday Evening Figure Drawing Salon

Join us on the first Saturday of every month for an evening of Figure Drawing with a live model! Starting in September, in our new studio, experience our figure drawing community while receiving a small demonstration and light direction from one of our amazing Teaching Artists. Snacks and beverages provided! 

Please bring your own supplies. Accepted mediums include: graphite, charcoal, pastels, watercolor, acrylics, and clay!

Surrealist Exploration

Surrealist Exploration is an immersive creative class designed to help students step beyond traditional art-making and into the world of intuition, symbolism, and imagination. Through a different technique each session, students will explore both the visible world around them and the hidden landscapes within themselves. Inspired by surrealist artists and creative practices, this class encourages curiosity, play, and personal expression while helping participants develop new artistic tools and ways of thinking. No prior experience is needed. only a willingness to experiment and explore the unexpected.
